Lower back pain
Pain in the lower back is the second most common reason for a trip to the doctor behind the common cold—striking about 80% of Americans during their lifetime. Discomfort can come from a range of causes such as strained tendons, sprained ligaments, and pulled muscles. Issues like a herniated disc, sciatica, or misaligned spine can also cause pain. Osteoporosis can lead to issues as well.
Discomfort can be classified into several types including acute and chronic. Acute pain typically comes on suddenly and improves within days to weeks while chronic pain lasts for more than three months.
While age is one risk factor for experiencing low back pain (often the first episode happens between 30 and 50 years of age), it is far from the only one. Being overweight can put stress on the back and being in poor shape can lead to weak back and abdominal muscles that can’t correctly support the spine. Genetics, pregnancy, and jobs that necessitate heavy lifting can also contribute to lower back pain. Smoking may also be a factor.
Getting the correct diagnosis is key and includes a thorough examination of you and your medical history. Questions about the pain are also asked including when it began, how severe it is, any limitations of movement, and more. Often the cause is difficult to diagnose and in some cases, imaging like X-rays, CT scans, or another test may be recommended.
A variety of treatments are available for lower back pain, including over-the-counter and prescription medications, hot and cold packs, and exercise. If you are still experiencing pain, chiropractic care may be able to help.
Our chiropractic care works to properly align your body’s musculoskeletal structure using hands-on spinal manipulation, spinal compression, and massage. When your spine is properly aligned it not only provides support for all of your organs but gives lymph and blood the ability to move throughout your body which encourages healing. When appropriate, we may also recommend physical therapy to help you strengthen your core muscles.
